Nico Sturm: Crossroads at the NHL Trade Deadline

As the NHL’s trade deadline approaches on March 7th, San Jose Sharks forward Nico Sturm finds himself contemplating a crossroads in his career. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, and no extension on the horizon, Sturm acknowledges the possibility of being traded.

“Realistically, as long as nothing’s done, I might probably expect to get moved,” Sturm stated in late December. "If there’s no contract extension, that’s just the reality of life in the NHL.”

The 29-year-old, entering the final year of a three-year deal signed with the Sharks in 2022, has been engaged in discussions with general manager Mike Grier and his agent. While negotiations have taken place, including a meeting in November during the Sharks’ trip to New York, the lack of progress brings uncertainty. Sturm believes the Sharks front office is nearing a decision about his future, given their current standing well out of playoff contention.

"I’m certain they have a better picture now of where we’re at as a group and how they want to move forward in the next few years,” Sturm remarked.

Despite a reduced role this season compared to his previous year with the Sharks, Sturm remains a reliable player. Through 39 games, he has contributed five goals and five assists, surpassing his pace from last season. His faceoff prowess continues to shine, leading the NHL with a 63.2% success rate among players with at least 100 draws.

Sturm’s value lies in his experience and skillset. With a modest $2 million cap hit, his faceoff dominance, and championship pedigree (victorious with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022 after being traded from the Minnesota Wild), he presents an attractive option for playoff-contending teams seeking a low-risk addition.

While he anticipates the possibility of relocation, Sturm remains focused on his performance regardless of his future.

“I’m going to do my job. I’m going to be nothing but a professional,” Sturm emphasized. “Whether I do sign an extension or do get moved, I’m going to keep doing my job, not going to sulk about it.”

Sturm, who turns 30 in May, hopes to secure a multi-year contract, ideally for three or four years. Although seeking a steady long-term commitment, he understands the realities of the NHL market.

“I think when you ask coaches, scouts, and other players about the type of player I am, certain attributes come to mind,” Sturm said. “I hope there’s going to be an NHL team out there, whether it’s here or somewhere else, that wants that type of player going forward.”

The Sharks have numerous other pending unrestricted free agents to consider, complicating their decision-making.

Amidst the trade buzz surrounding Sturm, Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini continues to shine. The 18-year-old has generated significant attention and praise, exemplified by praise from New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal.

Barzal and Celebrini spent time together last summer during Barzal’s offseason training sessions in Vancouver.

“He’s a great young kid,” Barzal stated. “He’s got a lot of energy, seems happy, and loves to be at the rink. He’s a superstar."

Celebrini’s impressive offensive contributions, with 32 points in 35 games, have solidified his position as a top contender for the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s rookie of the year.

"He’s got every tool,” Barzal further elaborated. “But what separates him is his work ethic. The way he competes on pucks and battles—I saw that in the summer. He’s got endless potential."

As the Sharks conclude their road trip with games against the Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators, all eyes remain on Sturm and the team’s strategic direction as the NHL trade deadline approaches.
