Anti-Corruption Fund Co-Founder Nikolay Staykov Departs Organization
Sofia, Bulgaria – After years of collaboration, the Anti-Corruption Fund (ACF) and Nikolay Staykov, a co-founder of the organization, have parted ways, the ACF announced on Facebook on March 6, 2026. The reasons for Staykov’s departure have not been disclosed.
A Key Figure in Bulgarian Anti-Corruption Efforts
The ACF acknowledged Staykov’s significant contributions, stating that the organization “would not be what it is today” without his energy, experience, and courage in establishing a strong and independent voice against corruption in Bulgaria.
Staykov was central to several high-profile investigations, including:
- “Eight Dwarfs,” “Quick Control List,” and “SGP Leaks” – investigations into networks of informal influence within the judicial system.
- “The Holding of Uncle Trevichko” – an investigation into the informal cartel led by businessman Hristo Kovachki.
- “The KTB Case: The Missing Names” – an examination of the financial and political connections surrounding the bankruptcy of Corporate Commercial Bank.
- “Apartmentgate” – an investigation into the questionable acquisition of luxury real estate by politicians and civil servants.
Staykov’s Background and Experience
Nikolay Staykov is an economist by training and has a long career in economic journalism, and editing. He served as a reporter, editor, and deputy editor-in-chief at “Capital” magazine from 1997 to 2007, specializing in economic analysis, investigations, and database work. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has over 20 years of experience in Bulgaria’s media and civil society organizations.
He is also the co-founder and spokesperson for noresharski.com, a civic media platform that emerged from the 2013-2014 civil protests in Bulgaria. Staykov has participated in international seminars and forums focused on countering corruption and has published opinions in numerous national and international media outlets, including the Recent York Times, Economist, and Financial Times.

The Anti-Corruption Fund affirmed its commitment to fighting corruption and protecting the public interest. The organization stated that its work will continue with the same goals and beliefs.
Recent Cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Industry
Just prior to the announcement of Staykov’s departure, the ACF began a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Economy and Industry to enhance transparency and prevent the misuse of public funds. The Ministry announced the cooperation on March 6, 2026, involving a meeting between Minister Bogdan Bogdanov, ACF Director Boyko Stankushev, Staykov, and Senior Legal Assistant Lora Mateeva. The initiative aims to address past abuses and violations in the management of public enterprises, including issues related to public procurement and state-owned companies.
