Tight Race in Nîmes: National Rally and Left-Wing Alliance Vie for Mayoral Control

Nîmes is poised to be a key battleground in the 2026 French municipal elections, with the far-right National Rally (RN) and a left-wing alliance locked in a closely contested race for control of the city hall. The outcome in Nîmes, like in other cities across France, will offer crucial insights into the national political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

First Round Results and Upcoming Showdown

Following the first round of voting on March 15, the “Proud to be Nîmes” list led by Julien Sanchez and the Nîmes joint list spearheaded by Vincent Bouget are neck and neck. Only 163 votes separate the two candidates, setting the stage for a tense final round on March 22.

A third contender, a coalition of outgoing candidates Franck Proust and Julien Plantier, remains a potential factor, particularly if votes shift in the second round. Analysts suggest the RN could benefit from votes consolidating on the right, while the left hopes to maintain its base and attract voters concerned about the far-right’s potential victory.

Broad Support for the Left-Wing Alliance

Vincent Bouget’s campaign has garnered significant support from prominent figures in Nîmes, including writer Lydie Salvayre (Prix Goncourt 2014, Prix Marguerite Yourcenar 2025), physician Remi Penchinat, historian Francine Cabane and legal expert Mounir Benslima. This broad coalition underscores the importance placed on preventing the RN from gaining power in the city.

Bouget’s Vision for Nîmes

At a rally attended by over 2,000 supporters – the largest such gathering in Occitania for the municipal elections – Vincent Bouget outlined his vision for Nîmes. He emphasized the demand for a city that prioritizes social equity, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability. Bouget called for a Nîmes where children are supported, seniors are cared for, families have purchasing power, and residents are protected from global warming. He stressed the importance of empowering citizens and building a city where everyone feels safe and included.

The Stakes are High

The Nîmes election is seen as a microcosm of the broader national political trends. The outcome will signal whether the National Rally can solidify its position as a dominant force in French politics, whether the left can overcome internal divisions to present a viable challenge, and whether the center can avoid further decline. Voters in Nîmes, and across France, are being urged to participate in the democratic process and shape the future of their communities and the nation.
