Nio Accelerates Solid-State Battery Development with New Shanghai R&D Unit
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has established a new battery technology subsidiary, Nio Battery Technology (Shanghai) Co Ltd, in Shanghai’s Jiading district to accelerate research and development of solid-state batteries. The move signifies a strategic shift towards a “Shanghai R&D plus Anhui manufacturing” model for its battery business, with scaled application of solid-state battery technology anticipated after 2027.
Strategic Expansion and R&D Focus
The establishment of the Shanghai R&D base follows a cooperation agreement signed between the Anting town government in Jiading and Nio. This new facility will concentrate on the development of next-generation power batteries, bolstering Nio’s battery technology layout and strategic capabilities [CnEVPost]. Nio’s global headquarters and existing R&D teams are already located in Jiading, while its manufacturing plants are situated in Hefei, Anhui province.
Investment and Existing Infrastructure
Nio Battery Technology (Shanghai) Co Ltd has a registered capital of 100 million yuan ($14.5 million) [Electric Vehicles]. The company already operates multiple vehicle and battery testing centers in Jiading, covering a total area of over 60,000 square meters [CnEVPost].
Solid-State Battery Technology and Future Plans
Nio is focusing on advancing cutting-edge battery technologies, including solid-state batteries, with expectations for large-scale deployment after 2027 [CnEVPost] and [Electrive]. The company is reportedly exploring both oxide and sulfide electrolyte technologies [CnEVPost].
Evolving Battery Strategy
Nio’s battery strategy has evolved in recent years. While initially pursuing asset-heavy in-house manufacturing, the company reportedly considered spinning off its battery manufacturing unit in late 2023 to reduce costs and accelerate profitability [CnEVPost]. Despite this shift, Nio continues to invest in battery R&D and has established external partnerships, including a five-year strategic cooperation agreement with CATL [CnEVPost].
Recent Collaborations
Nio has also been involved in collaborative projects, such as developing battery packs based on 4680 large cylindrical cells for British supercar brand McLaren, backed by its major shareholder CYVN Holdings [CnEVPost].
