Nissan Motor Co.Ltd. (Nissan) has confirmed that information of thousands of its customers was compromised after the data breach at Red Hat in September.
Nissan, a Japanese automobile manufacturer headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, produces more than 3.2 million cars each year. The company employs 120,000 people and has a strong presence in Japan, North America, Europe, and Asia.
In an declaration yesterday, Nissan said it was indirectly affected by a security breach at Red Hat, a U.S.-based enterprise software company.
“Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. received a report from Red Hat, the company it hired to develop customer management systems for its sales companies, that someone accessed its data servers without permission, and data was leaked,” Nissan stated.
“We later confirmed that the leaked data included some customer information from Nissan Fukuoka Sales Co., Ltd.”
About 21,000 customers who bought vehicles or received services at Nissan in Fukuoka, Japan, had the following information exposed:
- Full names
- Physical addresses
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Vehicle information (model, VIN)
Nissan is currently investigating the extent of the breach and is taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company is also notifying affected customers and advising them to be cautious of potential phishing attempts.
