Korea’s Tech Giants Invest Heavily in AI Chip Advancement

JoongAng Ilbo – 2025.09.13 18:00

South Korea’s leading tech companies, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are significantly increasing their investments in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) chips, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign technology and establish a stronger foothold in the rapidly growing AI market.

Samsung Electronics announced today a ₩20 trillion ($15 billion) plan over the next five years to develop next-generation AI chips, focusing on both high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and system-on-chip (SoC) solutions. The company aims to surpass current industry leaders in performance and efficiency, targeting applications in data centers, autonomous vehicles, and mobile devices.

SK Hynix, a major player in the memory chip market, is also accelerating its AI chip development, with a planned investment of ₩18 trillion ($13.5 billion) over the same period. Their strategy centers on developing advanced HBM chips specifically designed for AI workloads, capitalizing on the increasing demand for high-capacity, high-speed memory.

“The global demand for AI chips is exploding, and Korea needs to secure its own supply chain to remain competitive,” stated a spokesperson from the Ministry of science and ICT. “These investments are crucial for our national technological sovereignty.”

Industry analysts predict that the AI chip market will reach $300 billion by 2027, and South Korea is determined to capture a important share. Both Samsung and SK Hynix are actively seeking partnerships with AI software developers and research institutions to optimize their chip designs and accelerate innovation.

Though, challenges remain. Competition from established players like Nvidia and AMD is fierce, and the development of cutting-edge AI chips requires significant expertise and resources.Despite these hurdles, the Korean government and its tech giants are committed to overcoming these obstacles and establishing Korea as a global leader in AI chip technology.
