Warm, Windy, and Wet Weather Forecast for North Island of New Zealand
A low-pressure system is set to bring “warm, windy, and wet” conditions to the upper North Island of New Zealand starting Thursday, according to MetService forecasts. While the system’s center is expected to remain northwest of the country, associated weather patterns are anticipated to cause impacts across the region.
Uncertainty Remains in System’s Path
MetService meteorologist Samkelo Magwala noted there is “still a lot of uncertainty” regarding the precise path of the low-pressure system. This uncertainty introduces a “risk of severe weather,” prompting close monitoring and ongoing updates from MetService as needed.
Regional Impacts
Currently, Northland and Auckland are expected to experience the brunt of the conditions. Beachgoers in Northland should be particularly aware of larger-than-usual waves along the east coast on Wednesday and Thursday.
South Island Weather Patterns
Meanwhile, a separate cold front is forecast to affect the southern regions of the South Island towards the end of the week, specifically impacting Fiordland. While the south and west of the South Island are expected to face wet and windy conditions, eastern areas may see a rise in temperatures.
Mixed Conditions Earlier in the Week
Today, a front moving across the southern North Island is bringing cloudy, cool, and wet conditions to some areas. Eastern regions of the North Island can expect similar weather this afternoon and evening. Tuesday is expected to bring more fine spells and gradually warming temperatures, with daytime temperatures ranging from the low to mid-20s Celsius, and the possibility of lingering morning showers.
Recent Weather Developments
As of January 28, 2026, MetService meteorologist Samkelo Magwala reported settled weather, clear skies, and warm temperatures from Wairoa according to Newstalk ZB. A ridge of high pressure is currently holding strong over the North Island as of Monday, keeping rain away according to MetService.
