Finnish Man Sentenced to 16 Months for Domestic Abuse
A man in his 40s from Alta, Finland, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison by the Vestre Finnmark district court for the extensive abuse of his former spouse. The court detailed a pattern of violence frequently followed by remorseful text messages, which then repeated itself.
Escalation of Abuse
The abuse began in November 2020 during an incident in Berlevåg, characterized by jealousy. The man strangled the woman and threw her to the floor. This marked the beginning of a series of violent incidents spanning Alta, Hammerfest, and Jotka.
Humiliating Incident in Hammerfest
In the summer of 2023, in Hammerfest, the man threw his spouse out of a hotel room while she was wearing only underwear. He then tore off her underwear, leaving her naked and vulnerable in the hotel corridor, where she hid near an elevator shaft in fear of being seen. The court fully accepted the woman’s account of this humiliation, supported by subsequent text messages expressing her terror and describing the man as “dangerous.”
Brutal Violence and Psychological Abuse
The violence in their home in Alta involved repeated physical attacks, including punching, kicking, and striking the woman’s face and chest. On one occasion, her head was slammed against a wall while he held her hair. The abuse also included relentless psychological torment, with constant threats and demeaning nicknames.
Aggression in Jotka
During a trip to Jotka in February 2024, the man, while intoxicated, threw both a chair and a living room table at her, escalating the aggression.
Evidence and Denial
During the trial, the man denied any wrongdoing, claiming the accusations were false and motivated by revenge. However, the court dismissed his explanation as trivializing and inconsistent with the evidence. Key evidence included audio recordings of his aggressive behavior and a history of text messages revealing a pattern of violence followed by apologies and promises to abstain from alcohol.
Post-Traumatic Stress and Compensation
Medical reports indicated the woman has developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the prolonged abuse.
Sentence and Restitution
The Vestre Finnmark district court sentenced the man to 16 months in prison and ordered him to pay his ex-wife NOK 130,000 in compensation for the suffering caused. The court emphasized the importance of general preventive considerations in cases of domestic violence, highlighting the severity and duration of the abuse.
The convicted man received a minor reduction in his sentence due to time spent in police custody and is also responsible for covering NOK 10,000 in court costs.
