Notodden, Norway – October 4, 2024 – A landslide along the old Sauheradveien road on Hjuksevelta in Notodden, norway, has led to the evacuation of 27 residents from 10 households as a precautionary measure. Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation, assessing the stability of the area and determining when residents can safely return home. While no injuries have been reported, and residential houses appear undamaged, a section of the road and a nearby walkway have been closed.
Landslide Details and Evacuation Order
The landslide occurred on Saturday morning, October 4, 2024, impacting a portion of the old Sauheradveien. The South East Police District initiated the evacuation of the 10 households as a safety precaution, fearing further ground movement could endanger properties.
“We have people on site who are continuously assessing the situation. it also includes a geologist,” stated operations manager Marius Fosvold of the South East Police District to telen.no.
Road Closures and Traffic Management
Sauheradvegen was initially partially closed following the landslide. As of Saturday afternoon, traffic is now flowing in both directions with a narrowed lane configuration. However, the old Sauheradveien remains affected, and a walkway on the upper side of Sauheradvegen has been closed due to ground instability.
Assessment of the Situation
Thor Andre Hauge, Business Manager for the Notodden municipality, inspected the area on Saturday afternoon. He reported that while sections of the road and walkway have broken away, there is currently no indication of significant sliding on the opposite slope.
“Fortunately no people are damaged and it does not look like residential houses are directly damaged. Nor does it look like there is any sliding in the masses opposite here, and it is very good,” Hauge told Telen.no.He clarified that the evacuation decision was made by the police, not the municipality.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Outlook
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely, with a geologist on-site providing expert assessment. The duration of the evacuation remains uncertain, dependent on the ongoing stability assessments. Residents will be kept informed of any updates and given the all-clear to return home once authorities deem it safe.
