Nottingham Forest Owner Marinakis Receives Five-Match Ban for Spitting Incident
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has been handed a five-match stadium ban by the Football Association (FA) following an incident involving alleged spitting towards referee Josh Smith after a Premier League match.
The incident occurred in the tunnel area at the City Ground following Forest’s controversial 1-0 defeat to Fulham in September. Marinakis, who claims he suffers from a “hacking cough” and was disposing of phlegm, denies aiming spit towards the referee’s feet.
However, the independent regulatory commission, led by KC Dominic Adamson, concluded that Marinakis deliberately spat in a “disrespectful and disgusting display of contempt” towards the match officials, deeming it a violation of FA rules.
“An egregious display of disrespectful behaviour such as this fuels disrespect towards match officials,” stated Adamson. “The FA submit that the spitting was ‘entirely unprovoked’ and ‘no match official should be expected to tolerate such a flagrant display of disrespectful behaviour’. We agree.”
Marinakis, who appeals the ban, faces a significant absence from Forest’s upcoming matches, missing games against Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Newcastle United, Leicester City, and Arsenal.
Following the incident, Forest voiced frustration with refereeing standards, citing perceived injustices within the match. However, referee Smith and assistant referee James Mainwaring’s accounts corroborate Marinakis’ alleged actions, stating he spat on the ground near them as they passed.
This punishment marks a significant blow to Marinakis, who has previously faced scrutiny for alleged misconduct. Notably, Nottingham Forest received a £750,000 fine from the FA last week for a controversial social media post following last season’s defeat to Everton.
Marinakis’ ban is considered severe, ranking among the longest in English football history, surpassing Leyton Orient president Francesco Becchetti’s six-match suspension.
Marinakis’ actions have sparked wider debate regarding player conduct, respect towards officials, and the consequences of such actions in professional football.
