Nottingham Forest Reaches Europa League Quarterfinals After Penalty Shootout Win

Nottingham Forest advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals, defeating Midtjylland 3-0 in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 aggregate draw. The victory came despite manager Vitor Pereira resting several key players ahead of a crucial Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Match Recap

The second leg in Denmark ended 2-1 in favor of Nottingham Forest, leveling the tie at 2-2 on aggregate. Nicolás Domínguez opened the scoring for Forest in the first half, followed by a stunning strike from captain Ryan Yates. However, Martin Erlic equalized for Midtjylland, forcing the game into extra time.

Despite chances for both sides in extra time – with goals from Lorenzo Lucca and Yates being disallowed for offside – the match ultimately went to penalties. Midtjylland faltered, missing all three of their spot-kicks, although Morgan Gibbs-White, Ibrahim Sangaré, and Neco Williams successfully converted their penalties for Forest.

Pereira’s Squad Rotation

Vitor Pereira made nine changes to the starting lineup from the previous weekend’s draw against Fulham, prioritizing the upcoming Premier League clash with Tottenham. First-team regulars Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson, Murillo, Ola Aina, Matz Sels, Neco Williams and Ibrahim Sangare were among those on the bench. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Taiwo Awoniyi were not included in the squad.

Despite the significant changes, Forest demonstrated their depth and resilience, with several players seizing the opportunity to contribute. Gibbs-White, Anderson, Murillo, Aina, and Williams were all introduced during the second half.

Looking Ahead

Nottingham Forest will face FC Porto in the Europa League quarter-finals. The quarter-final matches are scheduled for April 9th and 16th.

Pereira emphasized the importance of balancing European ambitions with the team’s primary goal of Premier League survival. Forest will return to league action on Sunday, March 22nd, with a 2:00 PM kick-off against Tottenham Hotspur.

Quotes

Vitor Pereira (Nottingham Forest Manager): “We are very happy. We proved today we came here to compete, that we have good players. We played, in the first half, fantastic, away on this pitch. A very high level. Second half, with the subs, we kept going. I had the chance to balance the energy of the players to prepare the next game. When we win it is different. The spirit is different, the energy is different. The boys deserved it because they are a fantastic group. Very good players, with team spirit, character and we showed everything today. I don’t have any doubts we have the quality and we will compete to achieve our targets. And to thank our supporters – they deserve to keep playing in this Europa League.”

Ryan Yates (Nottingham Forest Captain): “I’m buzzing we’re through. Penalties always nervy, always tough, but the lads stepped up and we’re really pleased. It’s not over yet – we’re still dreaming. From minute one, the fans really helped us. Considering the changes, it shows the strength in depth we have, the spirit. At this stage of the season it’s about showing that togetherness, fighting for each other. A lot of lads played today who haven’t had many minutes – and a lot of them took their opportunities. That winning feeling is special. You want to keep that momentum going. Momentum at this stage of the season is huge. We need to recover well, focus on Tottenham and hopefully we can keep building and go and get those wins.”
