NDP MP Lori Idlout Joins Liberal Caucus, Bringing Carney Closer to Majority

Ottawa – Nunavut MP Lori Idlout has crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party, a move that significantly strengthens Prime Minister Mark Carney’s position and brings his government closer to securing a majority in the House of Commons. The announcement was made by NDP interim leader Don Davies on Tuesday night.

NDP Disappointment and Concerns Over Floor Crossing

Davies expressed his disappointment with Idlout’s decision, stating, “We’re particularly disappointed that Lori Idlout has decided to join the Liberal caucus.” He reiterated the NDP’s longstanding position on floor crossings, arguing that MPs who switch parties should seek a new mandate from their constituents. “We believe that when someone rejects the decision of their electors and wants to join another party, they should put that decision to their voters,” Davies said according to CBC News.

Liberal Gains and Path to Majority

Idlout’s defection brings the total number of Liberal seats to 170, leaving the party just two seats short of a majority government. This development is particularly significant given the upcoming byelections scheduled for April 13th in the ridings of Scarborough Southwest, Terrebonne, and University—Rosedale. If the Liberals win two of these byelections, they will achieve a majority as reported by CTV News.

Recent Trend of Floor Crossings

Idlout is the fourth MP to join the Liberal caucus in recent months, following Chris d’Entremont, Michael Ma, and Matt Jeneroux, all of whom previously represented the Conservative Party. This trend has drawn criticism from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who accused Carney of attempting to secure a majority through “dirty backroom deals” .

Reactions from Liberal MPs

Several Liberal MPs have welcomed Idlout to the party. Justice Minister Sean Fraser praised her as a “tireless advocate for Nunavut,” highlighting her dedication to delivering results for her constituents . Vancouver Granville MP Taleeb Noormohamed and London West MP Arielle Kayabaga also expressed their support.

Idlout’s Background and Previous Advocacy

Idlout was first elected as the MP for Nunavut in 2021, succeeding Mumilaaq Qaqqaq. She has been a vocal advocate for addressing issues facing the territory, including affordability and Indigenous rights according to APTN News. She endorsed Avi Lewis in the recent NDP leadership race.
