Air traffic control equipment failures in the New York City area triggered major ground stops on Monday, sending widespread flight delays rippling across the Northeast and heavily impacting Boston Logan International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration issued official advisories as the disruptions forced airports to manage heavy volume and take on diverted flights.
New York Area Failures and FAA Ground Stops
According to U.S. Transportation Sec. Sean Duffy, the Federal Aviation administration had to pause flights after a construction crew accidentally cut a fiber line during Amtrak work in New Jersey, causing a telecommunications outage. FAA Administration Bryan Bedford initially stated that an older Verizon circuit shared by New York City-area airports failed, prompting crews to locate a break in the fiber cable somewhere between Newark and New Brunswick, New Jersey. Repairs on the damaged cable were projected to take approximately 13 hours, according to federal officials.

A Verizon spokesperson stated that the incident stemmed from third-party activity near the rail line. “We have a fiber cable running adjacent to an Amtrak rail line in New Jersey,” the spokesperson said, adding that construction contractors dug up and cut the cable while Verizon’s facilities were fully functional up to that point. Verizon deployed technicians to the scene immediately, clarifying that the company bears no responsibility for the outage.
Impact on Boston Logan International Airport
The resulting airspace congestion severely disrupted operations at Boston Logan International Airport, which was already managing low cloud cover and ongoing runway construction. Massport, the agency that operates the airport, reported that Logan took on diverted flights from other Northeast hubs struggling with the Newark equipment issue. The FAA implemented a traffic management program and ground stops that kept flights bound for Logan from taking off.
Passengers faced significant scheduling hurdles as a result. According to FlightAware’s MiseryMap and airport status trackers, delays at Logan averaged one hour and 45 minutes for departures, while hundreds of inbound flights experienced airborne delays or schedule modifications. Massport and airport officials advised travelers to check directly with their airlines before heading to the terminals. The ground stop was lifted by approximately 3:30 p.m., though airlines continued working through lingering schedule adjustments.
