NYC Campaign Finance Board Sets Sights on Fairer Elections with Focus on Matching Funds

The NYC Campaign Finance Board (CFB) is kicking off 2025 with a renewed commitment to equitable elections, emphasizing its vital matching funds program. The first meeting of its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC) on February 12th will dive deep into this initiative, aimed at leveling the playing field for candidates from all walks of life.

“The matching funds program is absolutely essential to ensuring fair and competitive elections in NYC,” stated Samantha Greene, Chair of the VAAC. “We want to empower diverse candidates and make sure they have the resources to run successful campaigns, regardless of their financial background.”

Held virtually on Zoom, the meeting will provide a comprehensive overview of the program, its workings, and practical strategies for maximizing its benefits for aspiring candidates.

Throughout the session, attendees will:

  • Gain a detailed understanding of the matching funds program. Hear directly from the CFB’s Candidate Services team, who will provide a clear explanation of eligibility requirements, application processes, and funding structures.
  • Learn valuable tips and strategies for leveraging the program. Expert insights will offer practical guidance on how candidates can best utilize the program to maximize their campaign impact.
  • Discover new resources designed to empower candidates. A sneak peek at a newly developed video guide will equip aspiring candidates with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the political landscape effectively.

Accessibility is paramount for the VAAC. The meeting will feature American Sign Language interpretation, CART transcription, and Spanish-language interpretation. To accommodate diverse needs, attendees requiring additional interpreting services are encouraged to reach out prior to the meeting.

This commitment extends beyond this single meeting. The VAAC, a crucial advisory body to the CFB, actively works to enhance election integrity and accessibility through:

  • Hosting post-election hearings: Providing a platform for analysis and recommendations to improve future elections.
  • Recommending legislative and administrative changes: Advocating for policies that strengthen voter rights and promote a fairer system.
  • Collaborating on NYC Votes: Partnering with the CFB to champion voter registration, participation, and civic engagement initiatives across the city.

The CFB’s message is clear: “We want every New Yorker who is passionate about our city’s future to get involved! Attend VAAC meetings, engage with your local elected officials, and volunteer with organizations that promote voter registration and civic engagement. Every voice matters, and together, we can build a more representative democracy in New York City.”
