NYPD Officer Sorffly Davius Remembered Following Death in Kuwait

The New York City Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Sorffly Davius, who died Friday while deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Epic Fury. His remains arrived back in the U.S. On Monday and were honored with a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base .

A Life of Service

Officer Davius, 46, was a 12-year veteran of the NYPD assigned to the 79th Precinct in Brooklyn . He also served as a Major in the U.S. Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry Division . Davius suffered a medical episode while stationed at Camp Buehring in Kuwait .

Community Impact and Remembrance

Davius, a married father of six from New City, New York, was remembered by neighbors and friends as a kind and generous man. Stephen Chapman, a neighbor, stated, “If we could be half as good as this man, it would be great. He’s just so kind, generous, friendly … I can’t describe it. Just an incredible man.”

Army Major Anthony Migliore noted Davius’s dedication to service, stating he was part of Joint Task Force Empire Shield, working to deter terrorist activities. Migliore also recalled Davius’s technical skills and leadership qualities, with some soldiers overseas considering him a father figure .

Chapman shared that Davius had recently called him from Kuwait to check in, and they had planned a dinner upon his return, which was expected in about a month. Another neighbor, Marvin Baum, highlighted Davius’s concern for others, recalling he was one of the first to reach out after the events of October 7th .

Official Statements

“His career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City,” said a joint statement from Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani . Governor Kathy Hochul described Major Davius as a “true Citizen Soldier, devoted husband and father.”

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
