James Neesham Appointed New Zealand Captain for T20I Against South Africa
Wellington, March 22, 2026 – New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham will captain the BLACKCAPS for the first time in his career during the fourth T20I match against South Africa on Sunday. This appointment comes after Tom Latham was ruled out of the game due to a thumb injury sustained during the third T20I at Eden Park on Friday.
Latham’s Injury and Replacement
Tom Latham suffered a blow to his thumb from South African fast bowler Nqobani Mokoena while batting in the third T20I. Despite completing his innings with an unbeaten 63, guiding New Zealand to an eight-wicket victory, subsequent scans in Christchurch confirmed the injury necessitates his absence from the fourth match. Tom Blundell has been added to the squad as batting and wicketkeeping cover, marking his return to T20I cricket since April 2025.
Neesham’s Captaincy – A First for New Zealand
James Neesham becomes the 12th player to lead the New Zealand T20I team. He has been a key member of the New Zealand side since his debut in 2012, participating in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. James Neesham has also represented New Zealand in two ICC tournament finals, as a member of the squads that finished as runners-up at the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Recent Team Updates
This injury adds to a growing list of setbacks for New Zealand during the series. Ish Sodhi and Bevon Jacobs were previously ruled out due to a broken thumb and a left knee injury, respectively. Despite these challenges, New Zealand currently leads the five-match series 2-1.
