France Expands Coverage for Complex Obesity Treatment
A new decree published on March 4, 2026, expands access to reimbursed treatment and therapeutic education for adults with complex obesity. The program, initially tested in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, is now available nationwide as part of the 2026-2030 roadmap for obesity management announced in January 2026 by Minister of Health, Stéphanie Rist.
Comprehensive Care Pathway
The program provides a holistic approach to obesity treatment, combining medical support, dietary guidance, psychological support and tailored physical activity for individuals with severe obesity or related complications. According to Minister Rist, this expansion represents “an essential step forward in structuring more understandable and more effective care pathways.” Each patient will receive a personalized treatment and education program designed to meet their specific needs.
Future Expansion of Programs
Additional programs are in development, focusing on children with obesity and individuals preparing for bariatric surgery, as outlined in the 2026-2030 roadmap.
Addressing a Growing Health Concern
Obesity is a chronic disease affecting approximately 8 million people in France, with disparities linked to socioeconomic status and geographic location. It is a significant risk factor for chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can lead to psychological and social challenges, including low self-esteem, depression, and isolation.
Previous efforts to combat obesity included recognizing it as a chronic disease, establishing specialized centers, and implementing multidisciplinary care approaches. However, the Ministry of Health acknowledged in January 2026 that these measures were insufficient to halt the progression of obesity or address challenges in management and access to care.
Regional Investment in Economic Growth and Ecological Transition
In related news, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regional council approved a €153.3 million investment plan on February 6, 2026, aimed at stimulating economic development, ecological transition, and regional attractiveness. This plan includes €16 million dedicated to business and employment support, with direct aid to 21 companies totaling €1.51 million. 41 very compact enterprises also received €1.08 million in funding, supporting 118 jobs. Focus on Regional Development
The Pouilly-Bligny Community of Communes launched its “Roadmap 2030” project in March 2024, focusing on economic growth and regional attractiveness. This project involves a charter signed by key partners, including the Burgundy-Franche-Comté Regional Economic Agency, and aims to transform the local economic landscape by 2030. (AER BFC)
