Jorrit Bergsma Secures Historic Gold for the Netherlands at the Winter Olympics

Milaan/Cortina d’Ampezzo – Jorrit Bergsma, at 40 years old, has won gold in the mass start event at the Olympic Winter Games, marking the ninth gold medal for the Netherlands – a new national record. The victory surpasses the previous best of eight gold medals achieved at the last three Olympic editions.

Bergsma’s Dominating Performance

Bergsma previously secured a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at these Games and won gold in the same event in 2014. He narrowly qualified for the mass start final, finishing seventh in the semi-final, needing to be among the top eight to advance. In the final, Bergsma quickly established a lead alongside Viktor Thorup, creating a significant gap that their competitors couldn’t close.

With three laps remaining, Bergsma overtook Thorup and maintained his lead. The rest of the field strategically conserved energy, with some skaters nearly coming to a standstill. Stijn van den Bunt, also representing the Netherlands, finished last, strategically working to prevent a surge from sprinters like defending champion Bart Swings, American Jordan Stolz, and reigning world champion Andrea Giovannini of Italy. Giovannini ultimately secured the bronze medal, finishing ahead of Stolz.

Dutch Success and Upcoming Events

This gold medal adds to the Netherlands’ impressive performance at the Games. Marijke Groenewoud and Bente Kerkhoff are scheduled to compete in the women’s mass start event, hoping to add to the Dutch medal count.

Race Details

Bergsma and Thorup created a substantial lead, with Bergsma ultimately demonstrating superior endurance to claim the gold. Van den Bunt’s tactical ride played a crucial role in neutralizing the sprint efforts of key competitors.
