OpenAI Scales Back ChatGPT Shopping Feature, Signaling a Cautious Approach to Agentic Commerce

OpenAI has temporarily removed its “Instant Checkout” functionality within ChatGPT, shifting the focus back to directing shoppers to merchant websites or apps. This move, reported by The Information, underscores the experimental nature of “agentic commerce” and the challenges of integrating direct purchasing into conversational AI platforms.

The Rise and Fall of Instant Checkout

For months, the ability to shop directly within ChatGPT has been touted as a potential revolution in digital commerce. The concept, often referred to as “agentic commerce,” envisions consumers discovering and purchasing products through conversational interactions with AI. Although, OpenAI’s decision to scale back this feature suggests that the reality hasn’t yet matched the hype.

Limited Consumer Adoption

Despite the buzz, consumer adoption of answer engines like ChatGPT for shopping remains relatively low. According to a December 2025 Forrester Consumer Pulse Survey, only 23% of GenX US online adults have used ChatGPT to search for products in the past month. Adoption rates are higher among Millennials (32%) and GenZ (35%), but still modest overall.

Impact on the Shopify Partnership

The change also affects OpenAI’s exclusive partnership with Shopify. While the partnership remains active, with Shopify continuing to provide product syndication to ChatGPT, the native checkout functionality powered by Shopify Payments is no longer available. The Information reported that only a dozen Shopify merchants were initially live with the feature, a small fraction of Shopify’s total merchant base. Shopify’s ChatGPT-specific landing page now redirects to its homepage.

Key Challenges in Agentic Commerce

OpenAI’s move highlights several key challenges in the development of agentic commerce:

  • Inventory Management: Product feeds into answer engines often lack real-time inventory data, leading to issues with out-of-stock items or inaccurate availability.
  • Checkout Complexity: Replicating a seamless and secure checkout experience within an answer engine proves demanding, requiring complex payment integrations and compliance measures.
  • Consumer Preference: Data indicates that consumers primarily use answer engines for product research and general inquiries, rather than direct purchases. Forrester’s ConsumerVoices Market Research Online Community Survey (March 2026) shows completing a purchase within the engine is the least adopted use case.

What This Means for Merchants

Despite the setback, experts advise merchants to continue exploring the potential of answer engines as a digital channel. The key is to approach this emerging technology strategically and avoid over-reliance on any single platform or partnership.

  • Evaluate and Strategize: Treat answer engines as a distinct channel requiring its own dedicated strategy.
  • Diversify Your Approach: Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Spread risk by diversifying your digital channel mix.
  • Focus on Discoverability: Prioritize Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) to improve product visibility within these platforms.
  • Embrace Perpetual Learning: Stay agile and adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI.

As agentic commerce continues to evolve, the retail website is not going away, but will necessitate to change.
