Israeli Opposition Boycotts Netanyahu’s Knesset Speech During Modi Visit

Jerusalem – Opposition lawmakers in Israel’s Knesset boycotted speeches by parliament speaker Amir Ohana and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, to protest the exclusion of High Court President Isaac Amit from a special legislative session honoring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The opposition returned later to attend Modi’s address, with Opposition Leader Yair Lapid assuring the Indian leader the protest was not directed at him.

Political Dispute Behind the Boycott

The boycott stemmed from a dispute over the exclusion of Supreme Court Chief Justice Isaac Amit. Opposition Leader Yair Lapid had threatened to boycott the event if Amit was not invited, following a series of recent instances where Prime Minister Netanyahu’s coalition had snubbed the country’s top judge. Lapid appealed to Netanyahu to invite Amit to prevent the opposition from being “excluded” from the session. The Jerusalem Post reported on the unfolding situation.

Government’s Response and Previous Actions

Justice Minister Yariv Levin had previously refused to recognize Justice Amit’s authority after his election as court president in January 2025, refusing to meet with him or officially acknowledge his appointment. Several government members have echoed this stance, publicly challenging court orders and decisions. Amit has been excluded from other Knesset events traditionally attended by the Supreme Court President, including speeches by U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders.

Reactions and Accusations

Ohana accused Lapid of exploiting Israeli-Indian relations for domestic political gain, labeling the threat an “illegitimate” tactic. Yesh Atid released a statement blaming Ohana’s “disgraceful decision” for the walkout, stating they would only return for Modi’s speech to demonstrate respect for the alliance between the two countries. Moshe Tur-Paz, a Yesh Atid MK, accused Ohana of “disgracing the dignity of the State of Israel,” prioritizing political considerations over foreign relations.

Modi’s Address and Continued Diplomatic Ties

Despite the political turmoil, Modi addressed the Knesset, receiving a warm welcome. Lapid shook Modi’s hand upon re-entering the Knesset and emphasized that the opposition’s protest was unrelated to the Indian leader. He praised Modi’s leadership and the enduring alliance between Israel and India. The Associated Press reported that Modi’s visit aimed to strengthen security, economic, and technological cooperation between the two nations.

Government Efforts to Maintain Appearances

Following the opposition’s departure, former coalition lawmakers were invited to fill the empty seats to avoid a sparse appearance on television broadcasts. Sources indicated that Ohana personally contacted former MKs to ensure adequate attendance, highlighting the importance placed on the visit.

Calls for Unity and Government Stability

Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party released a statement following the session, arguing that the incident underscored the need for a broad, Zionist government and an conclude to internal political strife. They criticized Ohana for prioritizing Likud primaries over Israel’s diplomatic relations with India. India Today noted that enhancing defense and security cooperation was a key focus of discussions between the two prime ministers.
