Nikolay Denkov, co-chairman of the Progressive-Democratic Partnership – Humanist Bulgaria (PP-HB), believes it would be “extraordinary nonsense” if the opposition presented a presidential candidate within the next month or two. the former prime minister also expressed confidence that new parliamentary elections would yield different results if voter turnout increases.

New elections and Potential for Change

Denkov argues that the narrative of “nothing will change after new elections” is intentionally discouraging to voters. He stated that increased participation is key to achieving positive change in Bulgaria.

“It became clear that there would be new results, they could not fix Bulgaria. The mantra ‘nothing will change after new elections’ is to discourage people. If people go to vote, there will be changes,” Academic Denkov told BNR.

He believes that a higher voter turnout will demonstrate a clear desire for change and force a different outcome.

Presidential Candidate Strategy

Regarding a potential presidential candidate, Denkov emphasized the need for careful consideration of how the candidate will present their message. He indicated that the timing of the announcement is also crucial, suggesting it should occur “after many months.” The focus is on developing a strong and effective campaign strategy before revealing a candidate.

Firm Stance Against GERB and Boyko Borisov

Denkov was resolute in stating that PP-DB will not form a coalition with GERB and Boyko Borisov. He cited concerns about the behavior of GERB and Borisov as the primary reason for this decision.

“Borisov had a chance to break with Peevski, and now he works for his interests,” denkov asserted.

This statement underscores a clear ideological and political divide between the two parties, making a future alliance unlikely.

Key Takeaways

  • Denkov anticipates new elections will bring different results with increased voter participation.
  • He believes announcing a presidential candidate too soon would be premature.
  • PP-DB will not collaborate with GERB due to concerns about Boyko Borisov’s actions and alignment with Peevski.
