Bulgarian citizens can now apply for a new national ID card that incorporates a qualified electronic signature (QES), streamlining access to online services and enhancing digital identity security. The new ID card complies with the EU’s eIDAS regulation, ensuring its validity across all member states.

* Qualified Electronic signature: The integrated QES provides the same legal standing as a handwritten signature for most transactions,eliminating the need for separate digital signature devices.
* Secure Authentication: The card enables secure authentication to a wide range of e-government services, including those offered by the National Revenue Agency (NRA), the Social Security Administration (NSS), and the Ministry of Interior.
* Travel Document: The ID card remains a valid travel document within the European Union and several other countries.
* Biometric Data: The card includes a chip containing the holder’s biometric data (fingerprint), further enhancing security and preventing identity theft.
* Contactless Technology: Utilizes contactless technology (NFC) for quick and easy authentication.
Request Process:
Citizens can apply for the new ID card at any office of the Ministry of Interior. The application requires:
* A completed application form.
* Proof of Bulgarian citizenship (birth certificate, passport, etc.).
* A recent passport-sized photograph.
* Payment of a fee (currently 30.20 BGN).
* Biometric data capture (fingerprint scan).
Transition Period:
Existing national ID cards remain valid until their expiration date. the Ministry of Interior encourages citizens to upgrade to the new card upon renewal to take advantage of the enhanced security and functionality.
