## Unlicensed Senior Care Facility shut Down Following Repeated Violations

A care facility in the southern district of the city has been permanently closed following a court-ordered raid prompted by ongoing and serious deficiencies in care. The facility, known as “The Residence,” located on calle Litoral, had been operating despite a documented history of non-compliance with safety and care standards.

The closure comes after the new municipal management initiated increased oversight of senior care facilities. According to municipal director of elder care, Cecilia Cardenas, previous administrations had repeatedly sanctioned the facility, issuing fines that were paid, allowing it to reopen and continue operating with the same problematic practices. Initial inspections revealed critically important structural and care-related issues. The building was deemed inadequate for the number of residents it housed – sixteen older adults – and inspectors confiscated spoiled food.Concerns were also raised regarding unsanitary conditions, including pervasive dampness and a lack of basic hygiene.

Beyond the physical habitat, the care provided was severely lacking. Residents experienced a complete absence of cognitive stimulation, social interaction, and physical activity, leading to a demonstrable decline in their overall health and well-being. This isolation and lack of engagement exacerbated existing health conditions and negatively impacted their mental state.[[2]]

Perhaps most concerning, authorities discovered that family members were informed of the substandard conditions but failed to advocate for improved care or relocation of their loved ones. Despite a meeting scheduled in December to address concerns, only four family members attended. A follow-up attempt in February yielded similar results, highlighting a disturbing lack of engagement from those responsible for the residents’ welfare.

This case underscores the critical need for robust oversight of senior care facilities and the importance of family involvement in ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable adults. The closure of “The Residence” serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of neglecting the basic needs and rights of older adults. As of 2025, approximately 58.1 million Americans aged 65 and older are living in the United States, representing 17.6% of the population. Ensuring quality care for this growing demographic is paramount.
