Overwatch 2 Director Addresses Criticism of Story Content & PvE
Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller has acknowledged criticisms regarding teh lack of story content, PvE, and animated shorts.
During an interview with content creator Jay3 and Overwatch 2 voice actor Conor McLeod, Keller stated that story content needs to “come back” for Overwatch 2 to reach its full potential. He recognized player feedback expressing that Overwatch has “dropped the ball” when it comes to story and lore, noting the decline in animated short releases since 2023.
Overwatch animated shorts were initially a key component in building excitement for the game, showcasing character abilities and integrating the 43 playable characters into a larger narrative. However, releases slowed substantially around the launch of Overwatch 2 in 2022, with nearly two years passing since the last 3D-animated cinematic.
Fan frustration intensified when Blizzard announced the cancellation of its PvE Hero mode in summer 2023. While the team had to start anew following this decision, Keller assures fans that the Overwatch 2 team hasn’t abandoned storytelling altogether.
