Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 is bringing back 6v6, offering players a chance to revisit the classic format. Game director Aaron Keller recognizes that the 5v5 shift brought in new players, but developers are aiming to replicate that success with 6v6, emphasizing it won’t replace the existing 5v5 mode.
Addressing Past Challenges
During a July statement, Keller highlighted key concerns surrounding 6v6, namely hero balancing, game performance, and maintaining quick match-making even with divided player populations. Addressing these concerns, developers plan to adjust tank hero survivability, aiming to reduce their overall dominance.
Two 6v6 Formats Coming Soon
Season 14 of Overwatch 2 offers two distinct opportunities to dive into 6v6 gameplay:
- Open Queue: Each team of six players must consist of at least one tank, damage, and support hero, with a maximum of three heroes per role. Players will enjoy the flexibility to switch roles dynamically during matches.
- **Second 6v6 Test:** Launching mid-season, this test will allow teams to field two heroes from each role.
Simplified Gameplay?
Our gaming enthusiast colleague, Richard Lawler, noted that the shift to 5v5 streamlined Overwatch 2. However, he also observed that removing a tank per team led to increased reliance on a single role, potentially impacting game outcomes. The introduction of 6v6 aims to provide a more balanced and strategic experience.
