Isabelle Rodriguez, Spain‘s Housing Secretary, sent letters on Tuesday to officials in autonomous communities focusing on local governments in Madrid and Andalusia.

Rodriguez emphasized the “remarkable situation” in Madrid in a letter to ISEL’s homes. “We have found a notably high number of registration requests compared to other autonomous communities. Specifically, there are 21,043 request codes in Madrid society. We are surprisingly low when we refer to other communities with the same population.”

Rodriguez pointed out that in a market with many real estate owners, some are choosing to openly disregard the law. “They mentioned that the code required is the code that was mainly called,” she said, “another unique rental fee.” Many owners are using it to rent property for the purpose of tourism.

Thus, the ministry is advocating for regulations to limit the maximum period of overnight stays in a property.
