Abuse Scandal in the Archdiocese of Paderborn: Study Reveals Shocking Scale of Sexual Violence

A new study has uncovered a significantly larger number of perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse within the Archdiocese of Paderborn than previously known, spanning the period from 1941 to 2002. The research, conducted by a team led by Prof. Dr. Nicole Priesching, details harrowing accounts of abuse and a systemic cover-up that protected perpetrators for decades.

Extent of the Abuse

The study identified 210 clergymen who sexually assaulted children, impacting 489 victims. Researchers acknowledge that the actual number of cases is likely higher, as many victims may not have come forward. One victim, in an interview with Prof. Dr. Priesching, described a clergyman masturbating in front of him, causing the victim to cry and scream.

Systemic Cover-Up

Researchers found that reports of abuse were often dismissed, and perpetrators were shielded from prosecution. Instead of legal action, clergy were often punished internally through transfers. Archbishops Jäger and Degenhardt were reportedly informed of numerous allegations but often pressured victims and their families to prevent reports, perpetuating a “spiral of cover-up” that allowed abuse to continue unchecked.

Allegations Against Cardinal Degenhardt

Reinhold Harnisch, a spokesman for those affected, has raised further allegations against the late Cardinal Johannes Joachim Degenhardt. These allegations, although not included in the current study, are now being examined by the Archdiocese of Paderborn. Previous assessments in October 2025 had deemed similar accusations as implausible.

Ongoing Investigation

A second part of the study, covering the period from 2003 to 2023 during Archbishop Hans-Josef Becker’s tenure, is scheduled for publication next year. Acts from this later period will not be subject to statute-of-limitations restrictions.
