Pakistan and Qatar Strengthen Ties Amid Regional Concerns
Islamabad – Pakistan and Qatar are deepening their strategic partnership, focusing on economic cooperation, defense collaboration, and regional stability. Recent high-level meetings between Pakistani and Qatari leaders underscore a commitment to bolstering bilateral relations and addressing shared challenges.
Prime Minister Sharif’s Visit to Qatar
From February 23-24, 2026, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif undertook an official visit to Qatar at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The visit aimed to enhance diplomatic, economic, and trade cooperation between the two nations.
During the visit, Prime Minister Sharif met with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussing the full spectrum of bilateral relations and expressing satisfaction with the positive trajectory of political engagement. Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to a deepening economic partnership with Pakistan, elevating it to a strategic level.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution of disputes. Sheikh Tamim accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan later this year.
Prime Minister Sharif also held meetings with Qatari officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al Thani, and Minister of Foreign Trade Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed. Discussions focused on bilateral cooperation in defense and security, as well as economic and trade opportunities. A delegation from the Qatar Businessmen Association also met with the Prime Minister to explore potential economic collaborations.
An Iftar dinner was hosted by the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in honor of Prime Minister Sharif and his delegation.
Regional and International Issues
Pakistan and Qatar discussed regional and international developments of mutual interest, including the situation in Afghanistan. Qatar may play a diplomatic role in fostering dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a possibility welcomed by Pakistani officials.
Both countries also voiced concerns over the escalating tensions in the Middle East and reaffirmed their commitment to working together for peace and stability in the region and beyond.
Other Diplomatic Engagements
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar participated in the Extraordinary Ministerial Session of the OIC Executive Committee in Saudi Arabia from February 26-28, 2026, to address concerns over Israeli actions in the West Bank.
Senator Dar also held telephone conversations with his counterparts from Azerbaijan and Bangladesh, discussing bilateral cooperation and regional developments.
Pakistan joined other Islamic nations in condemning remarks by the U.S. Ambassador to Israel regarding Israeli control over occupied territories.
Samjhauta Express Anniversary and India-Pakistan Relations
Pakistan expressed severe disappointment at the lack of justice for the victims of the 2007 Samjhauta Express terrorist attack, in which 68 people, including 44 Pakistani nationals, were killed. The government condemned the acquittal of individuals accused of involvement in the attack, alleging Indian complicity.
Pakistan rejected India’s statements regarding alleged terrorism emanating from Pakistani soil, asserting its own evidence of Indian support for terrorist organizations.
Border Security and Afghanistan
Pakistan reaffirmed its right to self-defense in response to terrorist attacks originating from Afghanistan, stating that it will respond swiftly and strongly to threats. The country continues to demand action against terrorist groups operating within Afghanistan.
