ANP, PPP Condemn Fuel Price Hike, Warn of Inflation in Pakistan
PESHAWAR – The Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have strongly criticized the recent substantial increase in petroleum product prices, urging the federal government to reconsider its decision. Both parties warn the price hike will exacerbate inflation across Pakistan.
ANP Calls Increase an “Inflation Bomb”
ANP President Senator Aimal Wali Khan described the government’s decision to raise petroleum prices by up to Rs55 per litre as “anti-people” and likened it to dropping an “inflation bomb” on the public. Khan noted that while international petroleum prices have risen, the current fuel stock in the country was purchased at previous, lower rates. He criticized the government for collecting approximately Rs100 per litre in taxes and levies, arguing that instead of providing relief, they are imposing further burdens on citizens.
Khan warned the increase will disproportionately affect ordinary citizens, laborers, farmers, and the middle class, leading to higher prices for transportation, food, and other essential commodities. Aimal Wali Khan assumed office as a member of the Senate of Pakistan in April 2024.
PPP Deems Increase “Unfortunate and Unfair”
PPP Central General Secretary Mohammad Humayun Khan expressed serious concern over the price increase, calling it a “heavy burden” on the public. He specifically highlighted the timing of the increase during the holy month of Ramazan as “extremely unfortunate, and unfair.” Khan stated the hike would trigger a new wave of inflation, increasing the cost of essential goods and worsening hardships for the common man.
He urged the government to immediately withdraw the decision and implement effective measures to control inflation and provide relief to the population.
Protests and Crackdowns
The Peshawar Press Club president, M Riaz, and others also voiced their opposition to the fuel price hike, calling for its withdrawal. Concerns were raised that the increase would lead to unprecedented price increases throughout the country.
In Mansehra, the administration launched a crackdown on petrol stations, fining and sealing dozens for various violations. Assistant commissioners checked for hoarding and artificial shortages, but found the flow of petroleum products to be normal. The district administration reported sealing or fining stations for violations other than hoarding or profiteering.
LPG Prices Also Rise
In Swabi, the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) also increased following the petroleum price hike. A 10kg LPG cylinder rose from Rs3,100 to Rs3,800. Dealers attributed the increase to the US-Israeli attack on Iran.
Administration Warnings in Bajaur
The Bajaur district administration warned petrol pump owners against hoarding and violating official petroleum product prices, conducting surprise visits to fuel stations to check gauges and ensure compliance.
