Vladislav Gavrikov’s Role in Artemi Panarin’s Trade to the Los Angeles Kings

Artemi Panarin’s recent trade from the New York Rangers to the Los Angeles Kings wasn’t a random decision. The star winger actively sought a move to the Kings, and a key figure in swaying his choice was former teammate Vladislav Gavrikov. Panarin’s full no-move clause granted him significant control over his destination, allowing him to essentially operate as a free agent in negotiating a trade.

Panarin’s Pursuit of a New Home

As the March 6 NHL Trade Deadline approached, the New York Rangers signaled their intention to trade Artemi Panarin, as they were unlikely to re-sign him beyond his current contract. Panarin and his agent, Paul Theofanous, engaged in discussions with multiple teams regarding potential contract extensions. However, Panarin had a clear preference.

Gavrikov’s Influence

Panarin ultimately gave the Rangers permission to trade him to Los Angeles, a deal finalized on February 4th. He credited conversations with Vladislav Gavrikov, who played for the Kings from 2023-2025, as instrumental in his decision. “I tried to find a team for myself, where I want to be, so it was kind of about feeling,” Panarin explained. “Obviously, you look at the players, and then I spoke with Gavrikov the last couple days a lot.”

Gavrikov painted a positive picture of the Kings organization, highlighting the quality of the teammates and the appeal of Los Angeles as a place to live. Panarin echoed these sentiments, stating, “He introduced me to a great organization, great teammates in there and obviously a great spot to live. I just want to play for these guys, for that organization. Other teams were on the list too, but I actually never wanted to go anywhere else.”

Financial Considerations and Commitment

Despite potentially leaving over $30 million on the table, Panarin chose to sign a two-year, $11 million per year contract with the Kings. He prioritized finding a team that wanted him long-term, expressing a desire to avoid being “rented” for a short period. Panarin has played for three NHL teams and, with a wife, two children, and a dog, sought stability.

Why the Kings?

Panarin emphasized his desire for a long-term commitment and a strong organizational fit. He felt the Kings offered both, and Gavrikov’s endorsement solidified his belief that Los Angeles was the right place for him.
