Paradigm has closed a $1.2 billion fund, signaling a departure from its original cryptocurrency-only focus. The venture capital firm is now steering its capital toward artificial intelligence, robotics, and broader technological infrastructure, marking a significant evolution in its investment thesis.

A Multi-Frontier Mandate

The firm confirmed the $1.2 billion raise in a June 26, 2024, blog post penned by partners Matt Huang and Alana Palmedo. While the firm maintains its roots in the crypto sector, the new capital is specifically earmarked for founders operating in high-stakes fields like space defense, advanced manufacturing, and autonomous systems.

Portfolio Diversification Beyond the Blockchain

Evidence of this pivot is already visible in Paradigm’s recent commitments. The firm’s current portfolio now includes Zipline, which focuses on autonomous drone delivery, and SendCutSend, a digital manufacturing platform. They have also backed True Anomaly, a firm specializing in orbital space defense, and Nous Research, the developer behind the Hermes Agent AI technology.

Portfolio Diversification Beyond the Blockchain

Steady Commitment to Crypto Infrastructure

Despite the broader scope, Paradigm is not abandoning the blockchain. The firm continues to deploy capital into the ecosystem, including recent investments in Hyperliquid and its developer Trade[XYZ]. They also remain involved in Tempo, a stablecoin project co-founded with Stripe, and continue to support Kalshi, a regulated exchange for prediction markets.

Building Proprietary Technology

Paradigm is moving beyond the role of a traditional financier by building its own tools. The firm is actively developing blockchain and AI infrastructure through internal projects such as Foundry, Reth, and Centaur. This strategy extends to security; they are currently collaborating with OpenAI to develop EVMbench, a tool designed to assess and improve the security of Ethereum Virtual Machine implementations.

Market Positioning

Founded in 2018, the firm is positioning itself as a builder-investor focused on long-term infrastructure rather than speculative assets.
