TikTok challenge Leads to tragedy, Raising Concerns About Child Safety

In August 2025, a tragic incident involving a TikTok live video resurfaced, highlighting the dangers of online challenges. A young man died after drowning in a challenge that required participants to hold their breath in a small wooden tub. While the incident occurred in february 2024, the recent circulation of the video has sparked international discussion about challenges that could endanger children and adolescents.

As the pandemic, children and adolescents have increasingly participated in viral challenges on TikTok – also known as challenges – which involve imitating trends seen in short-form videos or photographs, frequently enough featuring celebrities, influencers, or peers, explains martina López, Data Security Specialist at ESET for Latin America.

López notes that some challenges are harmless, even with positive intentions. The Ice Bucket Challenge, which involved dumping a bucket of cold water over one’s head to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis, was generally a benign initiative.

“However, other challenges can have neutral consequences, such as striking a unique pose or taking a playful photo. But there are also dangerous challenges – from consuming certain foods to holding one’s breath for extended periods – and these have tragically resulted in deaths in various countries worldwide,” López explains.

López emphasizes that this issue transcends geographical boundaries, affecting a wide age range, from young children – who should not have access to social networks but often do – to adolescents and young adults.

Should Parents Monitor Their Children’s Online Activity?

“The key is to find a balance. It’s true that at certain ages, increased involvement is recommended – knowing who your child is interacting with,” López states.

As children grow, adolescents begin discussing various topics with friends and experiencing frist romantic relationships. “Maintaining a healthy balance starts with educating yourselves as parents or caregivers, understanding the available tools. Parental control tools are widely used for this purpose,” she adds.
