Lars Heggen Secures First World Cup Victory in Oberhof Sprint

Norwegian cross-country skier Lars Heggen, 20, achieved his first World Cup victory in the sprint event in Oberhof, Germany, on January 17, 2026. FIS-Ski.com reports the win as a significant milestone for the young athlete.

Race Recap

Italian veteran Federico Pellegrino finished the sprint, marking what would be his last competitive race before retirement at the end of the season. Heggen edged out Pellegrino in a photo finish, demonstrating remarkable speed and determination.

Sweden’s Erik Johansson also reached the final, a first for him at the World Cup level, but unfortunately fell during the race, finishing last in the final heat. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, having already secured the overall sprint cup title, did not participate in the sprint event.

Heggen’s Rise in the Sport

Lars Heggen has been steadily gaining recognition in the cross-country skiing world. He previously secured a podium finish in a classic sprint in Val di Fiemme. NordicMag.info highlights his impressive performance in the Tour de Ski, where he finished second in Toblach, just 13 hundredths of a second behind Klæbo.

Experts are already drawing comparisons between Heggen and Klæbo, with some suggesting Heggen could be Klæbo’s heir. Aril Monsen, a 1985 world champion, described Heggen’s performance as “powerful, really impressive,” while former coach Frederik Aukland stated, “He could be Klæbo’s heir.”

Looking Ahead

With only the 20-kilometer mass start remaining in this World Cup season, Heggen’s victory positions him as a rising star to watch in the coming years. His success adds depth to the strong Norwegian cross-country skiing team, which has seen 18 Norwegians reach the podium since the start of the 2024-2025 season.
