Crosby Passes Sakic, Penguins Beat Oilers 6-3

Sidney Crosby etched his name further into NHL history on Thursday, passing Hall of Famer Joe Sakic for sole possession of 12th place on the league’s all-time scoring list.

Crosby’s historic moment came during a dominant 6-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Playing at PPG Paints Arena, he tied Sakic with 1,641 points on Bryan Rust’s first-period goal before breaking the tie moments later with an assist on Drew O’Connor’s sixth goal of the season. This propelled the Penguins to a 4-1 lead, sending a clear message to the visiting Oilers.

Penguins Rally Past Oilers Struggles

The Penguins snapped a three-game losing streak with their first win over Edmonton since December 20, 2019. Alex Nedeljkovic stood tall between the pipes with 40 saves, while Rickard Rakell added his team-high 21st goal of the season. Pittsburgh’s victory came without injured center Evgeni Malkin, showcasing the team’s depth and resilience.

Connor McDavid, despite finishing with three assists, couldn’t quite lift the Oilers. Leon Draisaitl, however, contributed two goals, bringing his season total to 31 and maintaining his grip on the league lead. The Oilers’ impressive four-game winning streak ended, highlighting a shaky start for Edmonton, even with Skinner eventually settling down and finishing with 21 saves.

Looking Ahead

Crosby’s journey continues as he eyes Mario Lemieux’s Penguins franchise record of 1,723 points. Only 80 points stand between Crosby and tying Lemieux for eighth on the all-time scoring list. Next up for Edmonton is a battle against the Chicago Blackhawks, while Pittsburgh aims to extend its homestand win streak against Ottawa.
