Penn State Wrestling Poised for Historic NCAA Championships Run

March 16, 2026, 5:05 a.m. ET

Penn State’s wrestling team is positioned to potentially prove it is the best in the program’s history at the upcoming NCAA Championships. The team has the opportunity to break its own NCAA Championships team points record for a third straight year and, with six undefeated No. 1 seeds, could also break the all-time record for most individual champions in a single tournament.

Dominance Defined: A Season of Records

This week’s NCAA Championships in Cleveland will be a key measure of success for coach Cael Sanderson’s Nittany Lions. The team has already demonstrated a new level of dominance this season, achieving a school-record eight shutouts and extending their NCAA-record dual meet win streak to 86. They outscored opponents by an astounding 630-39.

Their performance at the Big Ten Championships further solidified their position, winning seven titles and setting a new team scoring record. Penn State won the 2026 Big Ten tournament title, showcasing their strength across multiple weight classes.

What to Expect in Cleveland: Schedule and Broadcast Information

The NCAA Wrestling Championships will take place from Thursday, March 19th, through Saturday, March 21st, at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. FloWrestling provides a detailed schedule and broadcast information. Matches will be broadcast across ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU, with full coverage also available on ESPN+.

Three Ways Penn State Can Make History

1. Breaking the NCAA Championships Points Record (Again)

Penn State broke the NCAA Championships team points record (172.5) two years ago and re-wrote it last year with 177 points. Their seeding projections and history of bonus-point scoring suggest they are poised to surpass that mark again. Eight of their ten starters are seeded in the top three, with nine in the Top 10, indicating a strong potential for early-round victories.

Junior Mitchell Mesenbrink and sophomore Josh Barr have been particularly effective at earning bonus points, achieving them in all 41 of their combined regular-season and Big Ten Championships bouts. Penn State scored 20 bonus points at last year’s NCAA Championships and is expected to exceed that number in Cleveland.

2. Surpassing the NCAA Championships Individual Titles Record

Penn State is currently tied for the most individual finalists (six) and title winners (five) in NCAA Championships history. No team has ever won six individual titles in a single tournament. However, with seven No. 1 seeds – six of whom are undefeated – and a strong contender in Marcus Blaze (seeded third at 133 pounds), the Lions are well-positioned to break this record.

Mesenbrink and Barr are considered strong favorites to win their respective weight classes. Luke Lilledahl (125 pounds), Shayne Van Ness (149), Levi Haines (174), and Rocco Welsh (184) have consistently ranked atop their weight classes throughout the season. Rookie PJ Duke also demonstrated his potential at the Big Ten Championships, dominating top-ranked opponents.

3. Crowning 10 All-Americans

The Lions became only the second team in history to have all 10 starters earn All-America honors at last year’s championships (Minnesota was the first, in 2001). While repeating this feat may be challenging, eight of their wrestlers are in a strong position to achieve All-America status, which requires a top-eight finish.

Junior Braeden Davis, seeded 14th at 141 pounds, may face an uphill battle after an inconsistent season. Redshirt freshman Cole Mirasola, seeded ninth at heavyweight, will also need to overcome experienced opponents to medal.

The 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships promise to be a historic event, with Penn State wrestling poised to cement its legacy as one of the greatest teams in collegiate wrestling history.
