Unilever Uganda Launches Pepsodent Oral Health Campaign for 100,000 Pupils
Kampala, Uganda – March 16, 2026 – Unilever Uganda has initiated a large-scale school outreach program through its oral care brand, Pepsodent, aiming to improve oral hygiene habits among children across Kampala and Wakiso districts. The campaign, launched to coincide with World Oral Health Day, will reach at least 100,000 pupils in 40 primary schools.
Addressing a Significant Public Health Concern
The initiative underscores the importance of preventative dental care, particularly among children. According to Uganda’s National Oral Health Policy, oral diseases remain a significant public health concern, with prevention and early education identified as key strategies to reduce the burden of dental conditions. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that nearly 3.5 billion people are affected by oral diseases [1].
“Do the 2 – Brush Day and Night” Campaign
This year’s outreach is centered around the theme “Do the 2 – Brush Day and Night,” encouraging children to brush their teeth at least twice daily using fluoride toothpaste. The campaign aims to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental complications. Interactive school-based sessions will educate pupils on proper toothbrushing techniques and the importance of daily oral hygiene habits [2].
Comprehensive Program Components
The Pepsodent campaign extends beyond education. The program includes the distribution of oral care products, enabling students to practice the techniques learned in school at home. Luck Ochieng, Managing Director of Unilever East Africa, emphasized the importance of early intervention in oral health, stating that building the habit of brushing twice a day from a young age is one of the most effective ways to prevent oral health problems [1].
Impact on Children’s Well-being and Education
Ochieng highlighted that poor oral health can disrupt children’s learning and overall well-being. Data indicates that school-going children sometimes miss school due to cavities and dental pain. Maintaining good oral hygiene allows children to eat well, remain healthy, and build confidence [2].
Collaboration and Long-Term Goals
The initiative has been welcomed by school leaders, including Angella Kisolo, Deputy Head Teacher at Nakasero Primary School, who believes the sensitization program will have a lasting impact on learners. Unilever Uganda’s campaign aligns with the Ugandan government’s broader public health goals of promoting preventative healthcare. Unilever operates in approximately 190 countries and serves over two billion consumers daily, with over 80 years of operations in Uganda [1].
