Capturing the Heart of Redon Country: Frédéric Niol’s Exhibition Celebrates Local Beauty

Frédéric Niol, who goes by the artistic name Philisfred, is more than just a photographer – he’s a storyteller. His recent exhibition at the Saint-Perreux town hall is a testament to his deep connection with his home region of Redon Country, France. Fifteen meticulously chosen photographs showcase a landscape that is familiar yet imbued with a unique vision.

Niol’s journey back to his roots is evident in his work. After exploring various regions like Ariège and Eure-et-Loir, he found himself drawn back to the landscapes that shaped him. "Anchoring? Because I am anchored in a territory. That of Redon country," he explains. "Even if I left for Ariège and Eure-et-Loir for a few years before returning here!"

His photographs, taken across different seasons, capture the soul of Redon Country. From the lush Gannedel marshes to the bustling port of Redon, Niol finds inspiration in the everyday details that often go unnoticed. "There’s no need to travel far to take good pictures," he says. "But what drives me is to offer a testament to our passage through this territory."

Niol’s approach to photography is one of reverence for nature. He doesn’t simply point and shoot; he carefully plans his shots, anticipating the perfect moment when light and composition converge. "I always make an appointment with nature," he explains. "I walk a lot with my dog. But when I want to photograph, I don’t go blind. I still determine a rendezvous – with nature, the sun…To be in the right place, at the right time! From there, the clichés are born as a detail of this nature, a landscape sublimated by the digital tool."

He readily recognizes that digital photography is "more ecological" than traditional film.

The exhibition is a multi-sensory experience, weaving together Niol’s photographs with poems by Marlène Thibaudault, a musician poet from Saint-Sébastien-sur-loire. Inspired by each image, Thibaudault’s poems add another layer of depth and emotion to Niol’s visual narratives. “We had a common point: that the public feels good by observing these shots and reading these texts,” Thibaudault says.

For Niol, this exhibition marks a significant milestone in his photographic journey. "This is the fifth media library I do, in a year, with this exhibition," he shares. "I’m almost moved, as I lived in Saint-Perreux. So when I proposed my photos to the media library, and the project was validated, I was happy."

Niol’s experience as a light manager during his studies in Nantes has undoubtedly shaped his artistic vision. "Light is a common point with photography," he explains. "So if the pure technical part is learned, my gaze is already exercised, especially as I have worked for the theater. Which brings an even different look."

Open until March 1, 2025, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the beauty of Redon Country through the eyes of a passionate photographer.

Niol’s work invites us to slow down, appreciate the details, and find inspiration in the everyday wonders that surround us.
