Entire villages lay submerged and scores of towns remained without electricity as Typhoon Fung-wong left the Philippines after killing at least five people and displacing more than a million.

Typhoon’s Path and Initial impact

Fung-wong, with a footprint spanning nearly the entire archipelago, slammed into the eastern seaboard as a “super typhoon” yesterday evening, uprooting trees and swamping towns in its path. The typhoon landed days after Typhoon Kalmaegi swept through the central Philippines, tragically killing at least 224 people.

Cleanup and Rescue Efforts

Cleanup efforts are now underway, stretching from Cagayan province in the far north to the heavily impacted catanduanes island, over 1,000 kilometers to the south.

Flash Flooding in Cagayan Province

In Cagayan, provincial rescue chief Rueli Rapsing reported that flash floods in neighboring Apayao province caused the Chico River to overflow, forcing residents to seek safety on rooftops. Most have been rescued, but verified video footage shows some individuals remain trapped.

Mark Lamer, 24, a resident of Cagayan’s Tuao town, described it as the “strongest typhoon I have ever experienced.”

Ongoing Challenges and Displacement

The widespread flooding and power outages present significant challenges for rescue and recovery operations. Over a million people have been displaced, requiring urgent assistance with shelter, food, and clean water.
