LPA Monitored Outside PAR, Northeast Monsoon Brings Rains to Parts of the Philippines

MANILA – A low pressure area (LPA) is currently being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). The LPA, located 1,690 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao as of 2 a.m. On Sunday, March 8, 2026, has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression and a small chance of entering PAR within the next 24 hours (PNA).

Weather Conditions Across the Philippines

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon (“amihan”) and the easterlies are influencing weather patterns across the country, bringing varying degrees of rainfall to different regions.

Luzon

Cloudy skies with rains are expected over Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga and Aurora due to the northeast monsoon. Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region will experience cloudy skies with light rains. Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Occidental Mindoro, the rest of Central Luzon, and the rest of Calabarzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rain.

Northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon will experience moderate to strong northeast winds and moderate to rough seas.

Visayas and Mindanao

Eastern Visayas, Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to easterlies. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, also caused by easterlies.

The rest of the country will have light to moderate northeast to north winds and slight to moderate coastal waters.

Potential Hazards

Moderate to heavy rains could lead to flash floods or landslides in affected areas (PNA).

Weekly Outlook

The trough of a low pressure area (LPA) is expected to cause rains over Northern Mindanao and Caraga (PAGASA). A low pressure area is forecast to form east of Mindanao near the boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday (Cebu Daily News).
