NFL Playoffs & College Bowls: A Weekend of Crucial Games

Week 17 in NFL: Playoff Hopes Hang in the Balance

It's the climax of the regular season, folks! Week 17 promises to be one of the most thrilling weekends in the NFL, with significant implications for playoff contenders.

Saturday Night Fever: Broncos vs. Bengals

The high-stakes clash between the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals (Saturday, 9.30pm) holds the key to both teams' playoff aspirations. The Broncos are in a prime position to clinch a playoff berth with a victory, currently holding the sixth spot in the AFC. Meanwhile, the Bengals are at 6-8 and facing elimination with a loss, sitting 10th in the AFC standings.

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been on fire, completing 361 passes out of 527 attempts for 3,977 yards, 36 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. He's a leading force in the league. Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase adds another significant threat, although the Bengals have struggled to close out games this year. Making the playoffs in the final stretch will be a monumental task. They need to win their last two games (including a Week 18 trip to the Pittsburgh Steelers).

The Broncos, on the other hand, have shown resilience. Running backs Javonte Williams and Audric Estime have been key contributors, and rookie quarterback Bo Nix has impressed in his first season. With 16 weeks of experience under his belt, Nix is tied for the most games with at least two passing touchdowns and zero interceptions as a rookie. He stands a chance to break the record in the final weeks of the year.

The Broncos boast the third-best run defense in the league, allowing just 3.88 yards per carry, which could be crucial in controlling the tempo on Saturday night. The Broncos haven't reached the playoffs since their Super Bowl 50 victory in February 2016. Landing a playoff spot in Sean Payton's second season would be a major achievement for the Colorado franchise.

NFC West Battle Royal: Cardinals vs. Rams

TNF Fans aren't just focused on Saturday, though. Sunday morning sees a critical matchup for the NFC West, with the Arizona Cardinals traveling to Los Angeles to face the LA Rams (1.10am Irish time) in a contest with added significance after the Seattle Seahawks’ victory over the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

If the Rams defeat the Cardinals, things could get a lot more complicated for Seattle's playoff hopes. More on that later, if it comes to that.

The Rams know what they need to do: win and they're in. Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford has efficiency, throwing for 3,463 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions so far this season. While WR Cooper Kupp has experienced some inconsistency, he remains a major threat in an offense that's starting to click in the final weeks.

Kupp has 737 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Kyren Williams has been a game-changer for the Rams, rushing for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns. The combination of Stafford’s ability to pass and knowing when to run against a tough Cardinals team that wants to stop their rivals’ playoff push will be crucial.

Draft Focus: Who Will Be First?

With one week left in the regular season, many teams eliminated from playoff contention are focusing on the 2025 draft. However, the draft order has seen significant shifts recently. The biggest change of the holiday period has been that of the New York Giants, who currently hold the first overall pick. The Las Vegas Raiders have dropped to sixth after knocking off the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, while the Chicago Bears have now crept into the top seven following another loss on Thursday Night.

Battle of the North: Packers vs. Vikings

A huge NFC North matchup on Sunday sees the 11-4 Green Bay Packers travel to face the 13-2 Minnesota Vikings. The North has been a showcase for the league's top teams this year, with Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Minnesota Vikings dominating with a combined record of 37-8. Four of those eight losses have come within the NFC North! It's clear to see the talent in this division.

This game is important for both teams, albeit for different reasons. The Packers have already secured a playoff spot, ensuring they'll contend in the post-season. However, they cannot win the division and are set to start their playoff journey away from Lambeau Field, regardless of Sunday's result.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love has potential for explosive plays against Minnesota, ranking second in the league for completions of 20-plus yards downfield, per PFF. This allows Love to exploit the Vikings' defense, which currently ranks 29
