Vince Gilligan Considered a Naked Cast for ‘Pluribus,’ Shared ‘Breaking Bad’ Rejection at SXSW

Austin, Texas – During a panel discussion at the 2026 SXSW Conference and Festival, “Pluribus” creator Vince Gilligan revealed a surprising early concept for the Apple TV+ series: a completely nude cast. Gilligan, alongside star Rhea Seehorn, shared anecdotes about the show’s development and the initial reception to his previous hit, “Breaking Bad.”

The Hive Mind and the Question of Clothing

Gilligan recounted brainstorming sessions about the visual representation of the “plurbs,” the characters who comprise the hive mind in the dystopian series. “We talked about they didn’t need to wear clothes at all, but we’re not working for HBO,” he joked, referencing the premium cable network known for its nudity. He quickly added, “But then we thought, we can’t do that to all these extras. We can’t all be naked.”

Rhea Seehorn responded with amusement, stating, “Oh my God, thank you… Can you imagine… if I had to try to act with 300 naked people?”

the creative team decided the characters’ clothing served a practical purpose. Gilligan explained, “We figured, they strictly wear clothes for protection against the sun and against cold or whatnot.” Costume designer Jennifer Bryan elaborated that the characters’ attire evolved over time, becoming more minimal and functional as individuality diminished within the collective consciousness. She noted that early episodes featured characters in the clothing they happened to be wearing when “The Joining” – the alien virus that merges everyone’s consciousness – occurred, including work uniforms.

Early Doubts About ‘Breaking Bad’

The panel as well touched on the origins of Gilligan’s previous success, “Breaking Bad.” Gilligan revealed that a former Sony Pictures Television executive initially dismissed the concept as “the single worst idea I’ve ever heard.” Despite this initial negative reaction, Sony ultimately produced the multi-Emmy winning series.

“Pluribus” currently streams on Apple TV+ and has already been renewed for a second season following its premiere.
