From teen Poker Games to Financial Ruin
Pupo recounts beginning to gamble as a teenager, initially through poker in underground, illicit gambling dens. He admits his father unknowingly managed his early gambling funds, and the environment was characterized by considerable sums of money changing hands. He describes a world where families were financially devastated by gambling debts.
Pupo emphasizes he never gambled for recreation,stating his motivation was always financial gain. This pursuit led to a point where his relationships, notably within his family, were jeopardized.He candidly shares that he even contemplated suicide in the late 1980s, finding himself alone in his car consumed by the weight of his losses.
“The only thing on my mind was earning enough at the casino to cover my debts to the banks,” Pupo explained. He estimates his total gambling losses to be at least five billion lire – a staggering sum. He recalls instances of losing 200 million lire in mere minutes.
A Confident Player Despite Massive Losses
Despite the immense financial damage caused by his gambling, pupo maintains a strong belief in his poker skills. He asserts he is the best poker player in Italy, having consistently placed highly in tournaments. He also recounts regularly winning against fellow musicians like Eros Ramazzotti and Enrico Ruggeri in friendly games, reinforcing his self-perception as a skilled player.
