Port of Riga Remains Fully Operational Despite Ice Navigation Season
Despite the onset of the ice navigation season, the Port of Riga remains fully operational and safe for vessel traffic, with no current restrictions in effect. Icebreaking operations are underway to ensure uninterrupted access to the port and along the fairway towards the Irbe Strait.
Ice Navigation and Safety Measures
Winter navigation in all Latvian ports officially begins on December 15th and concludes on April 15th, according to regulations set by the Cabinet of Ministers Freeport of Riga Authority. Shipowners are responsible for preparing their vessels for safe navigation in cold weather conditions, including equipping them with hull defrosting equipment.
Icebreaker Assistance and Communication
The Freeport of Riga Harbour Master makes decisions regarding the commencement of ice navigation in the Port of Riga and the Gulf of Riga, and determines the necessity of icebreaker assistance based on the operational situation. While the icebreaker service is provided by a commercial company, the Harbour Master maintains operational management of the icebreakers. During the ice navigation period, icebreakers communicate via VHF radio on Channels 16, 13, and 9 within the port water area Freeport of Riga Authority.
Vessel Traffic and Tugboat Support
Currently, seven tugboats from two companies are operating within the port waters, three of which are ice-class vessels Container News. Port clients can choose their preferred tugboat service provider based on safety and reliability.

The icebreaker VARMA is spearheading icebreaking efforts in the Gulf of Riga, adapting its operations to changing ice and weather conditions.
