Porter Moser to Return to Oklahoma with Increased Program Investment

Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Porter Moser will return for the 2026-27 season, athletic director Roger Denny announced Saturday. The decision comes with a commitment to increased resources for the program, including upgrades to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for players.

Denny’s Vision for the Program

In one of his first major decisions since being hired in January, Denny emphasized the need for Oklahoma’s investment in men’s basketball to align with the program’s aspirations. “It’s on Coach Moser to make sure that our team’s performance continues to meet and exceed our resources for the program,” Denny stated according to ESPN. “He’s done that and I’m confident he will continue to. But an underdog spirit will only take us so far. It’s my job to ensure that our resources match our expectations. We haven’t held up our end of that bargain. From NIL to staffing and beyond, we’re going to fix that.”

Moser’s Tenure at Oklahoma

Moser is currently in his fifth season at Oklahoma, having compiled a 93-74 record. 247Sports reports the Sooners reached the NCAA tournament last year and were on the tournament bubble this year, finishing the season with a 19-15 record after a loss to Arkansas in the SEC tournament. Prior to Oklahoma, Moser spent 22 seasons as a Division I head coach, including successful stints at Little Rock, Illinois State, and Loyola-Chicago, where he led the Ramblers to a Final Four appearance in 2018.

Recent Performance and NCAA Tournament Outlook

Oklahoma’s late-season surge, winning eight of ten games, improved their chances for an NCAA tournament berth. Despite the loss to Arkansas, Moser reportedly made a case for the team’s inclusion to the tournament committee, highlighting their strong finish. SI.com noted Moser argued the team was playing its best basketball at the right time.

Fan Support and Program Investment

Denny also appealed to Oklahoma fans to increase their support, recognizing the importance of a strong home-court advantage. He emphasized the need for enthusiastic fan participation to complement the financial investments being made in the program. “On top of how we resource our program, it’s critical our fans show out for our team,” Denny said. “I’ve seen firsthand the difference community support of college basketball can make. A bigger and louder crowd, a true home-court advantage, and a zealous fan base are all essential to our success.”

Looking Ahead

With Moser’s return secured and a commitment to increased resources, the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball program is poised to compete in the SEC. The focus will be on leveraging these improvements to build on recent successes and achieve sustained success on and off the court.
