UEFA Suspends Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni Amid Racism Allegations Against Vinicius Jr.

Benfica forward Gianluca Prestianni has been provisionally suspended by UEFA for one match following allegations of racial abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Júnior during their Champions League knockout playoff first leg. The suspension will see Prestianni miss Wednesday’s second leg in Madrid, although UEFA continues its investigation.

The incident occurred shortly after Vinicius Jr. Scored the only goal of the game in Lisbon last Tuesday. The Brazilian forward reported to referee François Letexier that Prestianni had made a racist remark, alleging the Argentine player called him a “monkey.”

UEFA has opened an investigation under Article 14 of its Disciplinary Regulations, which addresses insults to human dignity based on characteristics like skin color or race. A conviction under this article carries a minimum suspension of 10 matches, though Prestianni has initially received a one-match ban based on a “prima facie violation” – meaning there is initial evidence to support the claim.

Benfica has stated its support for Prestianni and intends to appeal the suspension, expressing regret at being “deprived of the player while the case is still under investigation.” Sky News reports the club released a statement on Monday outlining their intention to challenge UEFA’s decision.

Television footage shows Prestianni covering his mouth while speaking to Vinicius Jr., leading to the accusation. Prestianni has denied using racist language, claiming Vinicius Jr. Misinterpreted his words. However, The Independent reports that Kylian Mbappé claims to have heard the offensive language.

The first leg match was briefly halted for 11 minutes as the referee activated anti-racism protocols. Despite the allegations, no further action was taken during the game.

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho faced criticism for suggesting Vinicius Jr.’s celebration may have provoked a reaction from Benfica players, stating, “a stadium where Vinicius plays, something happens, always.” Sky News notes anti-discriminatory organization Kick It Out accused Mourinho of “gaslighting” for these comments.

Mourinho will not be present for media duties before the second leg, with assistant coach Joao Tralhao taking his place. He is also already serving a one-match touchline ban from the first leg due to a red card.

Sports Illustrated reports that Prestianni’s case is ongoing, and further punishment could be imposed pending the outcome of UEFA’s investigation.
