Prince William has signaled his intention to bring positive change to the monarchy when he ascends to the throne, stating, “change is on my agenda – change for the good.” In a recent, candid interview wiht actor Eugene Levy for Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler, the Prince of Wales shared his personal approach to his future role.

A Vision for the Future

William expressed his desire to create a meaningful legacy for his children, including his eldest son, Prince George, who will one day be king. “I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do, a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better,” he said. His other children, Prince Louis (7) and Princess Charlotte (10), are also central to his vision.

Protecting His Children from Media Intrusion

The prince addressed the intense media scrutiny he experienced growing up, and his determination to shield his own children from similar pressures. He described the media as “insatiable” during his youth, stating they sought “every bit of detail” and were “literally everywhere.” William emphasized his commitment to preventing this from impacting his family life, vowing that such a situation “would never happen to my family.” This concern echoes the experiences of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who also faced relentless press intrusion.

Embracing Change While Honoring Tradition

William articulated a desire to modernize the monarchy while respecting its traditions. He embraces change, stating, “I enjoy that change – I don’t fear it. That’s the bit that excites me, is the idea of being able to bring some change.” however, he clarified that this change wouldn’t be radical, but rather focused on improvements and increased impact.

He acknowledged the importance of tradition, but also questioned its continued relevance, asking, “Is that still fit for purpose today? Is that still the right thing to do? Are we still doing and having the most impact we could be having?”

Authenticity as a Guiding Principle

At the core of William’s approach is a commitment to authenticity. He explained that being king isn’t a constant preoccupation, stating, “It’s not something I wake up in the morning and think about, as to me, being authentic and being myself and being genuine is what drives me.”

He believes that maintaining his integrity is paramount, adding, “If I’m not true to myself, and I’m not true to what I stand for and believe in – then it doesn’t really matter who you are, it gets lost.” He emphasized the importance of taking ownership of his roles and responsibilities, rather than feeling defined by them: “You have to own them.”
