Hip Hop Feminism Takes Center Stage at Princeton University

Princeton University will offer a new course in the Spring 2026 semester, “Miss-Education: The Women of Hip Hop,” dedicated to exploring the foundational contributions of female rappers to the genre. The course will examine Hip Hop feminism through performance, scholarship and a public showcase.

A Course Centered on Women in Hip Hop

The multimedia course, lab, and performance workshop aims to position women’s history in Hip Hop not as an afterthought, but as central to the genre’s development. The curriculum will feature the work of influential artists including MC Sha Rock, Roxanne Shanté, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Bahamadia, Lil’ Kim, and Cardi B, representing a diverse range of eras and styles.

Expert Instructors

Leading the course will be a trio of experienced educators and artists: Chesney Snow, a Hip Hop educator and Princeton faculty member; Eternia, a Canadian Hip Hop artist; and Dr. Francesca D’Amico-Cuthbert, a Hip Hop historian and multidisciplinary artist and researcher. The course is a collaboration between Princeton University and its Lewis Center for the Arts, with support from the Hip Hop Education Center.

Interactive Learning and Creative Expression

Students will engage as both critical investigators and creative practitioners, drawing inspiration from the theatrical hybrid of the Lyricist Lounge Show. They will create skits exploring Hip Hop feminism, culminating in an original creative and scholarly work to be presented at the Lewis Center for the Arts on April 30th. The course is open to all Princeton students, regardless of discipline, and requires no prerequisites.
