Understanding the Babson trading Competition
The Babson Trading Competition, utilizes Liability Trading cases (LT3, LT4) designed to simulate real-world trading scenarios. Participants act as principal traders, receiving randomly routed institutional orders and deciding whether to accept them. Accepting an order requires developing a strategy to unwind the resulting position, carefully considering factors like market liquidity, price volatility, and potential price impact. This simulates the challenges faced by traders managing large institutional orders.
What is Principal Trading?
Principal trading involves a firm trading with its own capital, rather than on behalf of clients.Principal traders profit from the difference between the price at which they buy and sell securities. This requires a deep understanding of market dynamics and risk management.
Preparation and Industry Insights
Prior to the competition, students benefited from a discussion with Ken Martin ’95, co-head trader, and his colleagues from Fidelity Investments. Mettler Growney, sector Trader; mahitha Valluru, Quantitative Trading Analyst; and Zach Haggerty, Sector Trader, shared thier experiences working on a trading floor and outlined their career paths at Fidelity. This provided valuable insights into the industry and prepared students for the competition’s challenges.
