“Project Hail Mary” Rockets to Box Office Success, Boosting Amazon MGM’s Theatrical Push
Ryan Gosling’s space epic, “Project Hail Mary,” has launched to a stellar $140.9 million global box office debut, marking the largest opening of the year and a significant win for Amazon MGM Studios. The film’s success signals a potential turning point for the company as it aims to establish itself as a major player in the movie business.
Global Box Office Breakdown
The film garnered $60.4 million from 82 international markets and $80.5 million in North America. This surpasses the openings of “Scream 7” ($33.1 million overseas, $97.2 million worldwide) and 2023’s “Creed III” ($41.8 million overseas, $100.4 million worldwide), establishing a new benchmark for Amazon MGM.
A Stellar Adaptation and Direction
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on “21 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie,” “Project Hail Mary” is based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, author of “The Martian.” Weir’s previous adaptation, “The Martian,” starring Matt Damon, grossed $630 million globally.
Amazon MGM’s Strategic Investment
“Andy Weir’s beloved novel gave us a powerful foundation, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have created a visually stunning, heart-gripping film led by the brilliant Ryan Gosling that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible–together, with a crowd,” said Kevin Wilson, Amazon’s distribution chief. The debut of “Project Hail Mary” is the first commercial hit for Amazon MGM, which acquired MGM for $8 billion nearly four years ago and is unveiling its first full theatrical slate in 2026, with 13 films planned through December.
Industry Analysis and Audience Appeal
According to Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, the film’s success is a “testament to the power of Andy Weir’s original novel and the efforts Lord and Miller made in being faithful with the adaptation.” He added that the film is arriving at a time when audiences are seeking escapism.
IMAX and International Markets
“Project Hail Mary” ranks as the third non-sequel and non-franchise film to open above $50 million overseas since the COVID-19 pandemic, joining “Oppenheimer” and “F1: The Movie.” Top international markets include the United Kingdom ($10.2 million), China ($7.1 million), Australia ($5 million), and South Korea ($4.3 million). IMAX contributed significantly to the film’s success, generating $27.6 million in worldwide ticket sales.
