Project Hail Mary: Ryan Gosling’s Sci-Fi Epic Achieved Without Green Screen
Ryan Gosling’s upcoming sci-fi adventure, Project Hail Mary, is generating buzz not only for its compelling premise but also for its groundbreaking production techniques. The Amazon MGM Studios project, based on Andy Weir’s best-selling novel, remarkably completed filming without utilizing a single green or blue screen.
A Set Built on Practicality
Director Christopher Miller revealed in a recent interview with Comicbook.com that the entire spacecraft set was constructed physically, both internally and with a substantial exterior section. This commitment to practical effects extended to the portrayal of the alien character, Rocky, who was present on set throughout filming.
“What’s fun about the movie is that there is no greenscreen in the movie whatsoever. Not a single green- or bluescreen was used. The whole ship was built as a set from the inside… Rocky was… really with us at all times,” Miller stated. He emphasized that this approach contributed to the film’s realistic feel and allowed cinematographer Greig Fraser to capture dynamic and authentic moments.
A Significant Investment
Project Hail Mary represents a substantial investment by Amazon MGM Studios, with a reported gross budget of $248 million (approximately $200 million after tax credits), according to Puck. This makes it a notable release in a landscape increasingly dominated by CGI-heavy productions.
Early Praise and Anticipation
Early reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive. One reporter described it as “profound and profoundly moving, an absolute masterpiece of hope and humanity. It’s also insanely entertaining.” Another reviewer lauded the film as “a miracle,” drawing comparisons to the technical brilliance of Gravity, the problem-solving excitement of The Martian, and the emotional scope of Interstellar, while maintaining its own unique style.
Cast and Storyline
Starring Ryan Gosling as astronaut Ryland Grace, Project Hail Mary follows a man who awakens on a spaceship with amnesia, tasked with a desperate mission to save Earth from an interstellar disaster. He discovers he is not alone, forging an unlikely alliance with an alien from a world facing the same fate. The cast also includes Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.
Release Date
Project Hail Mary is scheduled for theatrical release on March 20, 2026.
